At the Department of Communication and Art - University of Aveiro, the research is carried by a growing number of researchers. Here follows a brief bio about our team members.


Co-Founders

Jorge Ferraz de Abreu [Social iTV Coordinator, PI of (running projects) CHIC, UltraTV]

Jorge Trinidad Ferraz de Abreu got his graduation and Master's degree in Electronic and Telecommunication by the University of Aveiro, Portugal. After his participation in several European projects he joined the Department of Communication and Arts and concluded his PhD in Sciences and Communication Technologies. Currently he teaches in the three levels of courses offered by its department: Undergraduate course, Master and PHD program. As a member of the research unit Digimedia (CIC.Digital), he develops his research activities in new media, cross-platform content and Interactive Television with particular interest in the development and evaluation of Social iTV applications.

Pedro Almeida [PI of (running projects) VideoBite]

Got his graduation in New Communication Technologies by the University of Aveiro and his PhD in the same university in Sciences and Communication Technologies. Currently, he is a lecturer in the Communication and Art Department in undergraduate, master and doctoral courses. As a member of the research unit Digimedia (CIC.Digital), he develops his research activities in new media, cross-platform and context-aware content and Interactive Television. He has special interests in multimedia communication systems and applications aiming the promotion of social practices around AV content in iTV, web or mobile. He has also been working in social media applied to education and organizational scenarios.

Telmo Silva [PI of (running projects) +TV4E]

Telmo Eduardo Silva got his graduation and Master's degree in Electronic, Telecommunication and Informatics by the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He got his PhD in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms by the University of Aveiro and University of Porto. Currently he is a Lecturer at the Department of Communication and Arts in University of Aveiro and he is also the coordinator of the +TV4E Project. As a member of the research unit Digimedia (CIC.Digital) his research interests are: design, development and evaluation of iTV services; computer networks; design and development of applications to mobile devices; and web applications based on Content Management Systems.

Rita Oliveira [Post-doctoral Researcher]

Rita Oliveira got her graduation in New Communication Technologies and her Master’s degree in Multimedia Communication, both by the University of Aveiro. She got her PhD in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms in 2014. Currently, she is Researcher (Post-doctoral) in the Social iTV group – Digimedia (CIC.Digital) and also Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication and Arts in the University of Aveiro. As a member of the research unit Digimedia (CIC.Digital), her research interests are related to the design and development of interactive television services adjusted to users with special needs, namely visually impaired persons.

Ana Margarida Almeida (Digimedia Researcher)

Ana Margarida Almeida holds a PhD in Communication Sciences and Technologies and has been developing research activities related to ‘ICT and special needs, ‘digital inclusion’, ‘media for all’, ‘communication and health’ and ‘health education/promotion through ICT´. She is an Assistant Professor and lectures in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral courses (‘New Communication Technologies degree’, ‘Multimedia Communications Master’, ‘Multimedia and Education PhD Program’ and ‘Information and Communication in Digital Platforms PhD Program”). She has developed several supervising activities of MSc and PhD students, highly related to her main research interests and she has been involved in different research projects and scientific initiatives.

Pedro Beça (CHIC Project)

Pedro Beça holds a degree in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering (2002), a Master’s degree in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Aveiro (2006) and a PhD in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms from the University of Aveiro and the University of Porto (2013). He is an Auxiliary Professor in the Department of Communication and Art of the University of Aveiro since 2007 and he is a member of DigiMedia. His areas of interest are: use of mobile devices and participatory culture; Web and mobile applications development, especially in the design, implementation and validation stages.

Rita Santos (CHIC Project)

PhD in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms from the Universities of Aveiro and Porto. Teacher at the Águeda School of Technology and Management, University of Aveiro and researcher of CIC.Digital – Center for Research in Communication, Information and Digital Culture. Her main fields of interest include ICT and Higher Education (Student Technology Use; Student Engagement and Interaction; Social Media), Digital Inclusion and Literacy (Web-use knowledge, attitudes and skills differences; Variation in online participation; Initiatives to improve people’s Web-use skills; Media production skills), as well as the Design and Management of Multimedia projects (in particular for the Web).

Denis Renó (Digimedia Researcher)

Is a Brazilian journalist and photographer. Doctor in Social Communication from the Methodist University of São Paulo (Brazil), he has developed post-doctorate on Transmedia Journalism by the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) and post-doctorate on Interactive Interfaces for mobile devices by the University of Aveiro ( Portugal). Currently, he is researcher in DigiMedia at University of Aveiro. In addition, he is an honorary professor at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) and visiting professor at the National University of Rosario (Argentina) and the Technical University of Loja – UTPL (Ecuador). He has special interests in transmedia Storytelling, Audiovisual, Photography and Media Ecology.

Hilma Caravau (+TV4E Project)

Hilma Caravau concluded her BSc degree in Gerontology in 2011 and received her MSc degree also in Gerontology in 2013, by University of Aveiro. Her investigation interests are related to interactive television applications for elderly, usability evaluation, applications of information and communication technologies for health and social services. Actually she is a researcher at the Department of Communication and Arts in University of Aveiro in the +TV4E: Interactive Television as a support to push information about social services to the elderly.

Carlos Silva (+TV4E Project)

Carlos Silva is graduated in New Technologies of Communication, and at the moment he is attending the Master in Multimedia Communication at the University of Aveiro. Actually he is part of the team of the +TV4E project (Interactive Television as a support to push information about social services to the elderly). He is always willing to integrate teams whose objective is to produce content that will satisfy needs and improve the quality of life of their target audience.

Martinho Mota (+TV4E Project)

Martinho is currently a student at the Masters Degree in “Multimedia Communication” in the University of Aveiro. While he’s not studying late nights he’s a researcher in DigiMedia where he develops iTV applications for the elderly. He loves programming, surfing, playing guitar and capoeira.

Liliana Reis (+TV4E Project)

She graduated in 2015, in New Technologies of Communication and got her master’s degree in 2017, in Multimedia Communication, both at University of Aveiro. Although her principal interest is focused on audiovisual production, film and photography, she’s motivated by the massive impact of new technologies in society, making her want to progress, personally and professionally, by willing to accept new challenges on any multimedia related subject.

Daniel Carvalho (+TV4E Project)

Daniel Carvalho got his graduation in New Communication Technologies and finished his Master’s degree in Multimedia Communication in 2015. Afterward, he worked as a training monitor in professional context for multimedia technician and worked as a graphic, web and industrial designer. Following by his interest about User Experience, he is currently working as a researcher at the +TV4E project and is studying for a Ph.D on Information and Communication in Digital Platforms in Universities of Aveiro/Porto (Portugal).

David Campelo (PhD Project - +TV4E)

David Campelo got his graduation and Master's degree in Computer Science by the Federal University of Ceará, Brasil. With 10+ years of experience in ICT, working on reputable companies as team leader, developer and researcher in innovative technologies of Participative TV, Connected TV and Interactive TV/IPTV, David is now studying for a Ph.D. on Information and Communication in Digital Platforms in Universities of Aveiro/Porto (Portugal).

Ana Velhinho (Ultra TV Project)

Ana is a communication designer, with a five-year BA in Communication Design (2005, FBAUL), a MA in Design and Visual Culture (2008, IADE) and is a PhD student in Image Theory at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, with her research project hosted by the CIC-Digital/Digimedia research unit. Currently, she is an interaction design researcher of the Ultra TV project and a member of the Social iTV group at the Department of Communication and Art of the University of Aveiro. As a designer, she develops graphic, editorial and multimedia projects focusing her research on post-internet culture and the influence of media and networking on image-driven practices and literacies.

Sílvia Fernandes (Ultra TV Project)

Sílvia Fernandes graduated with a MA in Communication Design from ESAD Matosinhos in 2014, and finished a BA in Design from the Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa in 2010. Having worked as a visual designer and art director for digital products and brands, she is now focusing on UI/UX for TV platforms.

Eliza Oliveira (Ultra TV Project)

Eliza Oliveira got her degree in Occupational Therapy in 2011 at Federal University of Minas Gerais and her Master degree in Informatics at Federal University of Paraíba in 2015, both in Brazil. In her master degree, she focused her studies on Human Computer Interaction, using tangible interacted devices for promotion of play in children with special needs. Currently she is Researcher at the UltraTV project, in the Social iTV group – Digimedia, in Aveiro.

Enrickson Varsori (Ultra TV Project)

Enrickson Varsori is a PhD student in Communication Sciences at University of Minho. Graduated in Social Communication at State University of Londrina and Master´s degree in Multimedia Communication at University of Aveiro. The current research interests focus on issues related with social use of time and screen devices, cyberculture. Currently works as a research fellow in the project UltraTV, on DIGIMEDIA (Digital Media and Interaction).

Rafael Guedes (Ultra TV Project)

Rafael Guedes holds a graduation in New Communication Technologies and Master Degree in Multimedia Communication, both by the University of Aveiro. Worked as front-end developer freelancer, for almost two years conceptualizing and building corporate websites and other digital products. Currently, he’s a researcher in UltraTV’s project. As a member of Digimedia group, his research interests are focused on user interfaces and user experience of the services offered by the new television’s paradigm.

Diogo Oliveira (Ultra TV Project)

Diogo Oliveira got his Bachelor degree in New Communications Technologies in 2016 in Portugal and is currently taking a Master degree in Interactive Multimedia Communications. In his degree, he is focusing his studies in creating news funtionalities with Interactive Natural Language for television and programming applications with Javascript Frameworks and SDK’s. Currently he is a researcher at the UltraTV project, in the social iTV group – Digimedia, in the University of Aveiro.

Ana Rodrigues (CHIC Project)

Ana holds a degree in Meteorology and Geophysics Oceanography and a master’s degree in Multimedia Communication, both by University of Aveiro. Worked as meteorologist and environment consultant for 4 years and as science explainer and outreach officer for more that 7 years. Currently, she’s a researcher in CHIC project. Her unconventional profile is a reflex of her natural curiosity and capacity to embrace new challenges and gave her a strong multidisciplinary background. As a member of Social iTV group, her research interests are focused on natural language interaction for television.

Paulo Neves (MSc Project - +TV4E)

Paulo Neves is graduated in New Communication Technologies, and at the moment he is attending the Master in Multimedia Communication at the University of Aveiro. Currently, he helps the team of the +TV4E project (Interactive Television as a support to push information about social services to the elderly). Paulo focuses on programming and user experience with a special taste for the conjugation of technologies in order to achieve the best performance of the systems. He has an associative and entrepreneurial spirit and is always willing to accept new challenges.

Mónica Aresta (2nd Vision Project)

Mónica Aresta got her graduation in New Communication Technologies and her Master and PhD in Multimedia in Education in the University of Aveiro, Portugal. For the past five years she developed research in the field of social media and education, web 2.0 tools and learning environments and, most recently, in the construction of identity in formal and informal online environments.

Lígia Duro (2nd Vision Project)

Lígia Duro is currently a UX Designer in the research project 2ndVision (a project about second screen and companion devices) in the University of Aveiro. In past she worked as a Creative Lead and Computational Design Researcher, in an Augmented Reality and Natural User Interfaces Project, at Computational Design and Visualization Lab, of University of Coimbra. She received a Master in Design and Multimedia – Design and Technology (2012), from University of Coimbra; and a Bachelor in Architecture of Design – Product Design (2008), from Technical University of Lisbon.

Guilherme Cabral (2nd Vision Project)

Got his graduation in New Communication Technologies by the University of Aveiro. Currently, he is on the first year of the Multimedia Communication Master degree. He has been always interested in Multimedia and Communication, as he has been studying in that subject for seven years. As a programmer and researcher of CETAC.MEDIA, his interests are related to interactive television and design and development of mobile and web applications.

André Ferreira (2nd Vision Project)

André Ferreira got his graduation in Social Communication, Radio and TV field (2003) by Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil; and his Master Degree in Multimedia Communication, Digital Audiovisual field (2009) by University of Aveiro, Portugal. Currently, he is a student in the Information and Communication in Digital Platforms in PhD program by University of Aveiro and University of Porto. Photographer and videomaker, developed a study and a short film for immersive cinema (Fulldome). Also a licensed teacher in Brazilian faculties, his investigation interests are related to branded content, audiovisual and E-marketing.

Bruno Teles (TV Discovery and Enjoy & Flexible TV Viewing)

Bruno Teles got his graduation in Multimedia and Communication by the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and his Masters degree in Multimedia Communication, audiovisual field, by the University of Aveiro. As an UI / UX designer he always has in mind aesthetics, usability and users experience issues in his projects. At this moment he is working on a mobile secondary screen app that will help users find the right tv program to watch.

António Pereira (Flexible TV Viewing)

António Pereira got the undergraduate course in Development of Multimedia Products by the Aveiro Norte School before his graduation in Information Technologies (Communication field) by the Graduate School of Technologies and Management of Águeda. Lastly, he got his Master in Multimedia Communication (Interactive Multimedia field) by the University of Aveiro. He worked in the Flexible TV Viewing Project, in which he implemented the application Guider for iPad and its website. Currently he continues to give support to this project and is a software developer for mobile platforms in the PT Inovação e Sistemas company . As interests he gets pleasure of develop software (web, ios, Windows Phone and so on) and make hardware (he is a Maker).

Miguel Sobral Cardoso (2nd Vision Project)

Miguel Sobral Cardoso got his first Master degree in Psychology by the University of Coimbra, Portugal and after two years studiyng photography at Porto technical school his passion for the multimedia environment lead him to sign in Communication and Multimedia Master at University of Aveiro . Concluding this Master, his passion for the human behaviour give him the interest to understand the best practices to give user the best multimedia experience he can have.

Nuno Oliveira (iNeighbour TV)

Nuno Oliveira got his graduation in New Communication Technologies and his Masters degree in Multimedia Communication by the University of Aveiro, Portugal. During two years, he was researcher and developer in the Social iTV team of CETAC.MEDIA (University of Aveiro) where participated on two projects: iNeighbour TV and Interative Advertisment. Currently, he works in Portugal Telecom Innovation in developing software for interactive television platforms for national and international clients.

Márcio Reis (MSc Project)

Márcio Reis got his graduation in New Technologies of Communication by the University of Aveiro. Currently, he is on the first year of the Multimedia Communication Master degree. At the same time he is a member of the research unit CETAC-MEDIA. Interativity/interface design and content planning is one of his biggest passions but as anybody else he believes that making things come to life is part the process. That’s why he does all the job. From sketch/design to programming. At this moment he is working on New models of interactive advertising at CETAC.MEDIA.

Leonardo Pereira (PhD Project)

Leonardo Pereira has a PhD in Art & Design (2013) by the Oporto University's Fine Arts Faculty (Fbaup). He also has a Master's Degree in Multimedia Communication (2009) by the Aveiro University's Department of Communication & Arts and a Graphic Design Degree (2003) by the Oporto University's Fine Arts Faculty (Fbaup). Currently, he works as a freelance Graphic Designer and teaches Motion Graphics, Video Compositing and Multimedia Design at the Minho's University in Braga.

Ricardo Pinto (WeOnTV and iNeighbour TV)

Researcher / Developer at Labs.sapo/ua since 2008. Degree in New Communication Technologies at the Department of Communication and Arts, University of Aveiro, Portugal. Projects: WeOntv and IneighbourTV

Diogo Costa (Crossed TV Games)

Researcher and Programmer at the Social iTV group, developing the Crossed TV Games project since July, 2010, at labs.sapo/ua. Degree in New Communication Technologies at the Department of Communication and Arts, University of Aveiro, Portugal.

Ana Pinho (Crossed TV Games)

João Afonso (iNeighbour TV)

Ricardo Dias (iNeighbour TV)

Finished the bachelor degree in New Communication Technologies by Universidade de Aveiro in 2010 after studying Web Development for one semester in Business Academy Copenhagen North. Continued my studies in Interactive Multimedia master degree in Universidade de Aveiro. Currently working as a researcher/developer at Labs Sapo in Universidade de Aveiro on the social iTV team, iNeighbourTV project.

Arulchelvan Sriram (iTV in India and Portugal)

Dr. Sriram Arulchelvan is doing Post Doctoral Research at the Department of Communication and Arts, University of Aveiro. He is working on Social ITV. Supported by FCT, Portugal. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media Sciences, Anna University, Chennai, India.
